Esquimalt Saanich Sooke – Tyson Riel Strandlund

Tyson is the Communist Party organiser for Vancouver Island, and a member of the Young Communist League’s Central Executive Committee. Pursuing his Master’s in history at UVic in the cultural, social, and political thought program, he will be defending his thesis in September on the global significance of the Soviet Union’s contribution to the history of decolonisation. Proud of his Métis heritage, Tyson has a long history of involvement in support of Indigenous solidarity movements, and believes strongly in the Communist Party’s demands for a new equal and voluntary partnership between the Indigenous and non-Indigenous nations of Canada, and the right of nations to self-determination.

Hardly a newcomer to federal elections, Tyson will once again be bringing the struggle for socialism to the familiar riding of Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke, currently held by NDP defense critic Randall Garrison – a notorious militarist and Zionist. Tyson in contrast has been involved in organising the anti-war and Palestinian solidarity movements for years. He is fighting for an independent foreign policy of peace and disarmament, and the redirection of Canada’s bloated and growing military budget to things working people actually need, including higher wages, increased pensions and disability rates, and comprehensive healthcare that includes optical, dental, mental health, and pharmaceuticals. He has also been invited to participate in international solidarity missions, including in Caracas, Venezuela, where he witnessed the successes of the Bolivarian Revolution first hand.

The working class needs a strong advocate who will fight for an end to growing poverty and inequality, to skyrocketing housing costs, and inaction on the worsening environmental crisis – someone who is willing to stand their ground and challenge corporate power directly, and put working people in control of their futures.
